Questions
Conceptual art is often about posing questions. The art rarely gives the answer, but allows the viewer to contemplate the question. Many people, however don’t think very profoundly about what they see and experience in life so a lot of conceptual art is inaccessible.
Elaborated thoughts on questions:
- Abstraction: why is it appealing to some, and baffling to others
- Difference in perception amongst people raises questions on psychology (everyone processes input differently… why?)
- Why can colour affect us emotionally
- If we understand our brain is ‘just’ an arrangement of particles does this negate any psychological issues we have?
- Can you then control and reshape your own mind?
- Composition: a good composition is pleasing to the eye because it follows a mathematical rule called the golden ratio, and if seeing something that follows a mathematical rule is pleasing to our senses then does this not mean we have an inbuilt/inherent connection and understanding of the natural systems of the world. The golden ratio is found in nature, so perhaps we prefer compositions that follow this rule because out innate self identifies with it and gains comfort from this familiarity.
- Form follows function is a design principle but pure art is form without function – or is the function of the form to make us think or feel something? So really “form follows function” is true in all areas of life. In nature form always follows function i.e. function dictates the form
